East West Rail: Opening up new connections to the UK

With new and improved links from your area to UK tourist destinations – where would you go?

Our new connections map and animation shows just some of the UK’s tourist hotspots that would be within easier reach once East West Rail (EWR) is up and running. With its intersections across the UK’s key railway lines, some of the nation’s most loved destinations would be accessible by train, offering more options and shorter journey times.

Whether it’s a trip to witness the magical River of Light festival on Liverpool’s waterfront; exploring the medieval narrow lanes of York or a cosy escape to the Cotswolds or the Lakes, EWR’s key links with the UK’s major railway lines would bring some of the most loved tourist destinations within easier reach.

Take a look a tour new video which shows where could soon be within closer reach of your community:

  • Make it Easier to get to Luton Airport

by DaveSlashDavid, about 1 month ago
We're off on holiday, a 7am flight from Luton so we need to be at the airport before 5am. There are four of us with luggage and so we need to get to Cambridge rail station from Haslingfield even though the shiny new railway runs about 100m from our house.

The only way is to drive to Cambridge, taking into account the need to change at Bedford I reckon the rail journey will take about an hour if we are lucky, so that means leaving home around 3:30 am to park the car and get to the station, parking for... Continue reading
  • Places I'd like to go

by SueT, about 1 month ago
I'd love to be able to visit my family who live near Oxford. This is very difficult for me as I don't have a car and live in Cambridge. I'd also like better access to go on holidays in that area and then on to Wales. It would be a tremendous benefit to me and also would hopefully allow others to use their cars less.
  • Oxford United's New Stadium next to Oxford Parkway Station

by OUFC's New Home, about 1 month ago

I'd visit Oxford United's new stadium which will hopefully be open by 2026 just 500 metres from Oxford Parkway station. Thanks to EWR, I and the large fanbase based in Bicester, will be able to travel to the new stadium in 8 to 10 minutes! EWR will make the new stadium nationally accessible by train making in easy for fans to access and make it possible for Oxford United to meet its aim of 90% of fans arriving at the new stadium by transport means other than car.

  • Star Rowing Club

The River Ouse passes through Buckingham (where it is barely a stream) and meanders east, via a less direct route than East West Rail, to Bedford. By then it is a broader, deeper, river that flows beneath the East West Rail route and has hosted the UK's largest one-day Regatta: in Bedford.

The Riverside in Bedford is a beautiful place for a walk (or a jog!): from the station quarter, via Evensong at St Paul's Church, along beside the hotels, parks and restaurants, the swans, the geese, the beautiful bridges to the marina and back.

Jogging early on a Saturday... Continue reading
